Introduction to Design & Engineering Applications (IDEA)

IDEA introduces students to engineering through a project provided by either campus leadership, community organization or other external client. In IDEA, students will:

  • Explore engineering disciplines
  • Practice engineering through real world projects
  • Learn about sustainability, teamwork and collaboration
  • Understand how math and science apply to engineering
  • Understand how creativity fits into engineering

How to register: EGT 140, 3 credits, Introduction to Design and Engineering Applications is offered each fall and spring semester. Pre-requisites: MAT 121. IDEA will transfer to Colorado School of Mines for EPICS i and to CU-Boulder Engineering for GEEN 1400 Engineering Projects.

Past IDEA projects:

  • fish and vegetable aquaponics system for RRCC greenhouse 
  • new frontage road sign with Martin/Martin Engineering for Red Rocks Community College 
  • new greenhouse laboratory for RRCC’s Water Quality Management program
  • filtration system for RRCC cooling towers
  • Makerspace for RRCC students and community
  • Self-contained greenhouse system (My Terrace Farmer) with industry partner Grio Technologies
  • Drones for international NGO to be used in landslide risk mitigation
